Do Kids Need Dental Sealants?

Have you ever noticed the teeth in the back of your mouth have natural grooves and crevices? These grooves and crevices can trap food particles and bacteria, which can encourage the growth of plaque. Plaque causes tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Sealants are a beneficial preventive treatment for keeping these dental issues at bay.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a simple and effective protective barrier that helps reduce your child’s risk of cavities. This thin, plastic coating is easily brushed by their dentist onto the chewing surface of molars. It is then cured with a blue light.

Are Sealants Safe for Kids?

Dental sealants are a completely safe dental treatment for little ones and adults. Once a child’s permanent molars come in, they are eligible for sealants to help prevent cavities in these teeth. Sealants last several years and can easily be reapplied when they wear out.

At-Home Preventive Dental Care

While sealants can help prevent decay and cavities, it’s important to encourage your child to still maintain a great at-home oral hygiene routine. They should brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time and floss daily, as well as brush their tongue. We understand that it can be difficult to get your child motivated to brush their teeth. Try to make the experience more enjoyable and exciting with a sticker chart, music, and/or a toothbrush with their favorite character or color.
