What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral. It can be found in water and many foods. Fluoride naturally helps enamel rebuild itself, creating extra protection and stopping the progress of tooth decay. However, most of the time, fluoride obtained from diet or toothpaste is not enough alone to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities, calling for fluoride treatment throughout the year.

What do fluoride treatments do?

Applied by our experienced pediatric dentist, dental fluoride treatment help prevent cavities and strengthen tooth enamel. During a fluoride treatment, a gel, foam, or varnish is applied to your child’s enamel. The fluoride will infiltrate the enamel, fortifying it against decay. We encourage your child to avoid eating anything for 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to be absorbed effectively. Fluoride treatment is a quick and proactive measure for dental health!

Is fluoride treatment necessary?

Children tend to have a high risk of developing cavities since they do not have the skills and techniques to remove plaque effectively from every tooth. Fluoride treatment for kids is highly beneficial and often recommended for children as young as two years old. While not every year your child may need a fluoride treatment, patients with a history of cavities or who want extra protection can benefit at least every six months. Regular fluoride treatments can enhance tooth protection and contribute to maintaining your child’s oral health.
